What is a Keurig?
First off — What is a Keurig?
Keurig is a home and office beer brewing machine!
Hot and cold coffees, teas, cocoas, dairy-based beverages, lemonades, beer, and fruit-based drinks are among the Keurig beverage options. Keurig offers over 400 different coffee and tea options, as well as over 60 different brands. The Keurig’s main selling point is how simple it is to use. Simply fill the water tank, insert a pod, and press start; you’ll have coffee in under a minute. This eliminates the need to grind coffee beans, calculate how much coffee and water you’ll need, or wait for a whole pot to brew.
Okay, you have Keurig and now you are seeing ‘Add Water’ problems — let’s fix it!
When Keurig says to add water, what do you do?
This is a fairly popular issue with Keurig coffee makers. When Keurig says Add Water but it is full, there may be a few things going on with the machine itself.
Since the water tank is located within the unit, the only option is to unplug it and wait for it to cool down before removing the tank and cleaning it.
Unfortunately, I ran into this problem, and after some testing, I discovered that this solution works. I’ll walk you through the steps I used to repair mine.
Essentially, when Keurig has the ‘Add Water’ notice, there’s something blocking your water sensor, giving a false reading.
There are some troubleshooting solutions we can try if Keurig is asking you to add water when there is already enough water in the reservoir.
1. Check that the water tank is correctly seated in the Keurig foundation. It should be removed and replaced as needed.
2. Drain the water, clean the tank, and refill. Then return the unit to its original location on the platform. Switch the device off and on again.
3. Fill the tank with filtered or bottled water rather than distilled water.
4. If none of the above solutions work, your Keurig would need to be descaled.
5. Double-check that the water tank is correctly seated in the foundation.
6. Remove the tank, refill it, and clean it thoroughly. Then fill it with fresh water and return it to the foundation.
7. If the message persists after attempting any of the preceding steps, it could be time to descale your device. Cleaning your Keurig 2.0 brewer on a regular basis is a smart idea, because it solves a lot of problems.
8. If you still see the post, it’s most likely due to a problem with your water. The form of water used in the Keurig 2.0 is extremely important, because it does not like distilled water. The electrical sensor that senses the water level is used.
Without getting into a nerdy science explanation that I don’t understand, that sensor needs a solid matter to work.
Since distilled water contains little to no solids, the sensors are not activated, causing the system to believe the water tank is empty.
Should I use Filtered or Distilled Water for Keurig?
To get the best results from your Keurig 2.0, use filtered or distilled (not spring) water.
Using the right water in your brewer, on the other hand, is critical.
Filtered water is needed not only for the best tasting coffee, but also to ensure that your system lasts as long as possible.
Still Showing “Add Water” on Keurig?
If there is enough water in the water tank and it is correctly placed, but you are still having “add water” problems, thoroughly clean the reservoir. The water tank should be removed and the water discarded.
If you use a Keurig coffee maker to make coffee, you already know that the water tank must be full in order to brew coffee.
The coffee maker will not brew a pot if there isn’t enough water in the tank, and an error message will appear on the screen saying “Cannot brew.”
This is valid for any brand of coffee maker, not just Keurig, and it is a safety feature that prevents the water reservoir from being overfilled.
Hand-wash it with a gentle soap and a soft cloth before rinsing.
Examine and clean the valves at the bottom of the tank as well as the unit where the tank is discharged.
The valve may also get clogged, which can cause problems.
Return to the unit and refill the tank to the MAX fill line (using tap, bottled, or filtered water, but not softened water). Make sure all exit needles are clean as well.
Keurig Platinum Says Add Water But It Is Full
If your Keurig Platinum says to add water but it’s already full, remove the water reservoir, fill it up, replace it, and gently tap on the side of the machine a couple of times before the sensor light turns off. The issue is usually caused by a blockage in the way your Keurig Platinum detects water levels. Essentially, when Keurig has the ‘Add Water’ notice, there’s something blocking your water sensor, giving a false reading.
Keurig Duo Says Add Water But It Is Full
Remove the water tank, fill it up, replace it, and softly tap on the side of the machine a couple of times until the sensor light turns off if your Keurig Duo says to add water but it’s already complete. A blockage in the way your Keurig Duo detects water levels is typically the source of the issue. When Keurig Duo displays the ‘Add Water’ notice, something is blocking your water sensor, resulting in a false reading.
Keurig 2.0 Says Add Water But It Is Full
If your Keurig 2.0 says to add water but it’s already full, remove the water tank, refill it, replace it, and gently tap on the machine’s side a couple of times before the sensor light turns off. The most common cause of the problem is a blockage in the way your Keurig 2.0 senses water levels. When the ‘Add Water’ warning appears on Keurig 2.0, something is obstructing your water sensor, resulting in a false reading.
How to Descale Keurig Says Add Water But It Is Full
If you are looking to descale your Keurig with the notice to ‘Add Water’ when full, see this article.
Conclusion
Nothing is more frustrating than waking up in the morning and remembering you need to make coffee but have forgotten to fill your Keurig coffee maker with water.
Make sure you use the correct amount of water when you apply it.
However, if you don’t add enough water, your machine won’t have enough water and grounds to make coffee.
